Why your business still needs a website

October 18, 2026

With Facebook, Instagram, Google Business Profiles, LinkedIn and about a million other places to show up online, it’s fair to ask: does your business actually still need a website?

Short answer: yep.

And not because we build websites and would quite like you to buy one.

A good website gives your business something increasingly important online: a space that is actually yours.

Social media is rented space

Social media is brilliant for businesses. We use it, we manage it for clients, and we absolutely think it should be part of your marketing mix.

But it shouldn't be your entire online presence.

Your Facebook page belongs to Meta. Your Instagram account belongs to Meta. Your LinkedIn page belongs to LinkedIn. Even your Google Business Profile exists within Google's ecosystem.

Algorithms change. Accounts get restricted. Platforms fall in and out of favour. Features disappear. Organic reach can drop overnight.

Your website is different.

With the right setup, you own your domain, your content and your website. You decide what people see, how they navigate it and what action you want them to take.

Think of social media as the signs pointing people towards your business. Your website is the front door.

It's where people go to check that you're legit

Before someone calls, emails, asks for a quote or walks through your door, there's a pretty good chance they'll Google you.

What they find matters.

A professional website gives potential customers somewhere to quickly answer the important questions:

Who are you? What do you do? Where are you? Can you help me? How do I contact you?

It doesn't need to be enormous or packed with fancy features. It just needs to make it easy for someone to understand your business and take the next step.

A clear, current website also gives you credibility. If someone has heard about you through word of mouth, spotted your ute around town or found you on social media, your website helps back that up.

A website doesn't have to cost the earth

One of the biggest misconceptions about websites is that every business needs a huge, custom-built site with dozens of pages and an equally huge price tag.

They don't.

For plenty of small businesses, a simple, well-designed website is more than enough.

A straightforward site might cover who you are, what you do, your key services, a bit about your business and a clear way to get in touch.

Then, as your business grows, your website can grow with it.

The important thing is spending money on the bits that actually add value to your business, rather than adding bells and whistles because someone told you that you need them.

Cheap and affordable aren't necessarily the same thing

Yes, you can build a website yourself. There are plenty of platforms that make it possible, and for some businesses that's a perfectly reasonable place to start.

But there's a difference between being able to put a website online and having a website that actually works well for your business.

That's where professional support earns its keep.

A good web team isn't just making things look pretty. They're thinking about structure, mobile responsiveness, accessibility, search engines, performance, security, content and what you actually want visitors to do when they land on the site.

They're also there when something needs updating, breaks, stops making sense or you simply have no idea what DNS means and would prefer to keep it that way.

Your website should work for your business

Ultimately, a website isn't something you need just so you can tick the "we have a website" box.

It should have a job.

Maybe that's generating enquiries. Maybe it's explaining a complicated service before someone calls you. Maybe it's helping people find your opening hours, showcasing your work, recruiting staff or giving customers somewhere reliable to find information.

Whatever the goal, your website should make running and marketing your business easier, not become another thing on your to-do list.

And it doesn't need to be the biggest, fanciest or most expensive website on the internet.

It just needs to be yours, work properly and help your customers find what they need.
